How memberships are processed

Membership Information

The Avery Memorial Association offers two types of membership: Membership based on Avery lineage and a “Friends of the Association” membership for those interested in the Avery family history but without documented ancestry.

Applying for Lineage-Based Membership

Applications are typically submitted via email. Applicants must trace their lineage back to Christopher Avery using The Groton Avery Clan genealogy as a starting point. They should begin with their last known ancestor listed in the book and then provide documentation – such as birth, marriage, and death certificates; census records; church records; or probate records – to conclusively establish descent for each preceding generation. A copy of the applicant’s own birth certificate is also required. Documentation must clearly demonstrate a direct line of descent from Christopher Avery through the male lineage (the blood carrier line).

If an applicant is related to a current member, they may submit their application jointly, provided it meets current genealogical standards.

Our Genealogist will review each application and notify applicants if any additional information is needed for approval.

Upon Approval

Approved members receive a certificate of membership, a membership card, and a copy of the Association’s bylaws. Please allow time for processing, as approvals are handled in order received.

Friends of the Association Membership

The “Friends” membership is open to individuals without documented Avery lineage who share an interest in the family’s history. Basic contact information (name, address, email) is required. Upon verification, Friends members enjoy the same privileges as those with proven Avery ancestry.

Contributing to Our Archives

We welcome members to submit any documentation supporting their Avery lineage, even if an ancestor is already listed in The Groton Avery Clan. These materials are preserved in our extensive archives at the Ebenezer Avery House on the grounds of Fort Griswold Battlefield in Groton, CT, and may be valuable resources for future research by both current and prospective members. Archives access is available by appointment to members and those with a general interest in Avery family history.
